Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony is widely regarded as one of, if not his greatest musical achievement. In this symphony Mozart achieves a perfect balance of seemingly effortless sound, held delicately over stunning complexity. The “Jupiter” name derives from the opening chords, which reminded several listeners of the Roman deity of the same name.

Each of the movements of Holst’s The Planets suite are remarkable in their own way. Despite Holst’s own admission that the subtitles are not programmatic in nature, they help us to frame the music and give enhanced meaning. The piece ranges from Mars, the Bringer of War – a relentless Allegro with clashing dissonance and in 5/4 time – to Neptune, a shimmering slow movement that fades into the distance.
